DOME is a community-based not-for-profit Employment & Training organisation that has been offering services to mature age unemployed and disadvantaged people in South Australia since 1981. Looking for a job is never easy, so when you finally secure an interview you probably put quite a bit of pressure on yourself to succeed.
But there are a few barriers to your success at interview. Some of these barriers can be controlled some can’t. What you can control Preparation - I've interviewed 1000’s of people over the years, and spoken to 100’s of hiring managers. The feedback is that many people do not invest enough time into their interview preparation. I’ll give you an example. I spoke with one of the HR Managers out at Guide Dogs SA/NT, they ask people “Why do you want to work for us?”. You can probably guess what most people say. Yes…. “Because I like dogs”. As you can imagine this gets pretty boring if you are interviewing 20 people in one day and they all want the job for this reason. What is going to stand out is someone who has researched the organisation and has a full understanding of what the organisation does. Even better is if you can articulate how the skill you have developed over your career match what the organsation is looking for. It’s not all about the dogs! They also employ cat lovers 😉 . They are:

You just need to let the interviewer know that you have developed these skills and that they are relevant for their position. You might not think your skills are transferable but did you know the FYA also created research showing that when a person trains for one job, they acquire skills for 13 other jobs. Conclusion The best possible action you can take to stand out at an interview is to prepare. This alone will help you stand out from the competition and allow you to approach the interview with confidence. It is also important to understand the skills you have developed during your career, and focus on what you can do for the employer!
